Celebrating Our Wins in 2020

We are very proud of all we have accomplished in the past year. If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we must celebrate our wins – big and small – and lead with empathy, grace, and courage while we navigate this increasing volatile, complex uncertain and ambiguous world.

Can we celebrate our wins with you for a moment?

When the stay at home orders were implemented, we were just two weeks away from launching Leadership L.A. 2020. As “pivot” and “new normal” became the most commonly used phrases, we had to quickly shift our programming to virtual – like so many others in this industry. Fast forward to December, we continue to successfully deliver all three of our programs – Leadership L.A., Leadership Southern California and the Riordan Leadership Institute – and a number of alumni events remotely.

When everyone was scrambling to adapt to remote work, we provided three leadership webinars focused on leading remotely and implementing mindfulness practices.

When the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor reignited the Black Lives Matter movement and our fellows were grappling with systemic racism and protesting in the streets, we rescheduled programming to hold space for our fellows to have difficult conversations.

Maintaining our alumni programming to provide continued learning opportunities and exposure to unique locations in our region, we organized virtual tours with two of our partners – Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and Pasadena Tournament of Roses – opportunities we hope to continue into 2021.

Like most nonprofit organizations, we held our annual gala – the SCLN Visionaries Awards – virtually and celebrated the work of three extraordinary women, Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Charlene Thomas and Nichol Whiteman, who are committed to equity and racial justice. We also were able to provide SCLN alumni partners and funders the opportunity to interact and have those serendipitous conversations so missed this year. Exceeding our fundraising goals, this year’s Visionaries Awards will enable us to continue our DEI efforts by providing scholarships to underrepresented leaders.

None of this would have been accomplished without the dedicated leadership of our Board of Directors, and the grace, flexibility, and feedback from the trail blazers in our current classes. A sincere thank you to all of our partners who guided us through this unprecedented year.

As we head into the holiday season and look forward to growth in 2021, the SCLN team wishes you and your family much health, happiness, peace, and prosperity! Remember to take time to rest, rejuvenate, and celebrate your wins.

With gratitude, Blanca, Kauleen, Erin, Lindsay, and Jessica
