Preparing regional leaders for a global future
SCLN is expanding opportunities for our alumni to better connect with Southern California's global competitiveness strategies.
The region's crossborder and Pacific Rim location, in addition to its critical trade infrastructure like the Port of Los Angeles, LAX and the Alameda Corridor, have long made Southern California a player on the global stage. SCLN seeks to incorporate these themes-- which are widely believed to be an underutilized advantage of the region-- to craft alumni programming and briefings. Specific program areas include:
- Partnering with the German Marshall Fund. SCLN is now the Southern California regional selection partner with the German Marshall Fund of the United States. The prestigious and competitive program is a 24-day fellowship in Europe for emerging leaders aged 28-40, in government, business, and the nonprofit sector who are committed to strengthening transatlantic relationships. Benefits of the program include coverage of all travel expenses, transportation, itinerary coordination and stipend for each participant. The 2011 nomination process is now closed. The 2011 American Marshall Memorial Fellowship recipients will be announced in November 2010.
- Global Connections Series. Los Angeles alone is home to an estimated 30 ethnic enclaves, including settlements that are internationally recognized as the largest populations outside their respective countries of origin. Examples of ethnic enclaves in terms of size and economic impact include Vietnamese in Orange County (Little Saigon); Koreans in Los Angeles (Koreatown); Chinese in Los Angeles; and Latinos throughout Southern California. Through partnerships, SCLN organizes a series giving background information on the communities and the ethnic country of origin; providing guidance on developing cross-cultural relationships; and demonstrating how these communities lend cultural and linguistic advantages that can be leveraged more effectively for the region as a whole.
