Leadership L.A. 2010 evaluates the impact of national healthcare reform on Los Angeles
The Leadership L.A. Class of 2010 continued its nine-month program with a session on Friday, June 11 focusing on health care in Los Angeles. The Fellows met at LAC+USC Medical Center with Dr. Hector Flores, Director, Family Care Specialists Medical Group to discuss the impact national reform has had on Los Angeles' local health care providers and practitioners.  As part of the day, Fellows also met with Jennifer Ybarra, Program Manager, The California Endowment, and toured the Legacy LA facilities and Ramona Gardens neighborhood.  Ybarra stated "it's not enough to have health insurance. A healthy community shapes an individual's quality of life. Lou Calanche, Executive Director, Legacy LA, highlighted key issues that still inhibit quality of life in Ramona Gardens, such as air quality and access to quality food. Excursions moderated by Pete Delgado, President & CEO, LAC + USC Healthcare Network, among others, gave the Fellows the opportunity to analyze three different systems used to provide medical services in LA: public hospitals, private hospitals, and community clinics. Leadership Southern California joins the Chamber at Access Sacramento

The Leadership Southern California 2010 class met in Sacramento on Tuesday, June 1 to discuss the important role leadership plays in helping the legislature effectively govern and reach consensus on issues vital to California's future. The Fellows met with Rich Callahan, Director, University of Southern California Capitol Center, to better understand the characteristics and development path required to make an effective leader. Callahan explained "Leadership is done in an uncertain space. Leaders should be uncomfortable. They develop over time and are made by design, not born." On Wednesday, June 2 the Fellows joined the Chamber's advocacy teams on issues related to state policy on healthcare, education, and transportation and goods movement among others. Fellows heard from State Assembly Speaker John Perez and State Controller John Chiang on the importance of fiscal responsibility. Additionally, Fellows met with legislators throughout the day to discuss pending bills and propositions for reform. Read more @SCLN. View photo gallery.

LSC focuses on Natural Resources Management
The Leadership Southern California 2010 discussed the challenges and opportunities Southern California faces in securing the future of its energy resources on Friday, May 28 at the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) . The Fellows heard from Gilbert Ivey, Assistant General Manager and Chief Administrative Officer for MWD & Board Member for the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce on the steps MWD has taken to secure its water delivery system from the Sacramento/San Joaquin Bay Delta. John Vrsalovich, Senior Engineer, MWD explained the "water-energy nexus" and important link between water treatment, delivery, and energy consumption. For further understanding the Fellows visited the Robert A. Skinner Treatment Plant 8-acre solar panel installation. David Foust, Treatment Operations Manager, MWD stated "on a clear day up to 55 percent of the energy needed to run the treatment facility is generated by the solar installation. The installation, which costs $5 million after government rebates, will pay for itself in 6-7 years." Additionally, the Fellows met with Ralph Hicks, Real Property Manager, MWD at the Diamond Valley Lake Western Sustainability Institute & Museum to discuss the important role leadership development will play in the industry as nearly 70 percent of the MWD staff is now eligible for retirement.
