Leadership L.A. focuses on water, wraps program with personal leadership commitments The Class of 2009 met on Nov. 13 to discuss environmental leadership and the future
of water in Los Angeles with Gilbert Ivey, Metropolitan
Water District of Southern California as part of the
final session. A panel of scholars and community leaders, including L.A. City
Councilmember Jan Perry, discussed water infrastructure challenges and innovations in Los
Angeles. "We will need to continue to have these conversations [on infrastructure], even though at times it gets rancorous," said Councilmember Perry. Fellows wrapped their nine-month program by making personal
commitments to leadership in the community. Read more

Four local leaders selected for American Marshall Memorial Fellowship SCLN is pleased to announce the selection of four Los Angeles leaders for the German Marshall Fund's (GMF) 2010 American Marshall Memorial Fellowship: Marcus Castain, Founder and CEO, Infrastructure Academy; Colleen Haggerty, Senior Vice President, Media Relations, Bank
of America; Alma Marquez, Vice President, External and Government Affairs,
Green Dot Public Schools; Angela Reddock, Founder and Managing Partner, The Reddock Law
Group. "This is an important leadership opportunity for Southern
California leaders to develop international, and particularly transatlantic,
perspectives on major policy issues," said Kevin Cottrell, Executive Director,
Southern California Leadership Network, the Southern California nominations and
selection partner with GMF.
They will be part of a group of 54 leaders, representing 18 states and the District of
Columbia, who are committed to strengthening transatlantic
relationships on this prestigious 23-day fellowship in
Europe. This partnership with GMF is part of the SCLN leadership initiative on global connections.
Conversations with Leaders event explores future of energy in California "California is the third largest consumer of energy, after the other 49 states and China," said Joe Sparano, president, Western States Petroleum Association at the SCLN Conversations with Leaders event Nov. 3. Sparano painted a picture of our region's dependence on imported energy; and highlighted the importance of leading the nation on emissions reduction and alternative energy. The program was followed by a guided
tour of the refinery and a reception. This event is part of the SCLN leadership initiative on natural resources sustainability. Read more

SCLN makes connections with the Iranian-American
community SCLN
continued exploring Southern California's ethnic communities with the second
dinner in its alumni leadership initiative, Global Connections, which
creates links between leadership alumni and civic leaders across Southern
California's many ethnic enclaves. The Oct. 13 dinner focused on the
Iranian-American community with a traditional dinner in Westwood, or
"Tehrangeles," which is the largest community of Iranians outside of Iran.
Author and lecturer Gina Nahai (pictured above, left); Vice Mayor of Beverly Hills Jimmy
Delshad (pictured above, right); and other academic and business leaders attended to discuss the
challenges the Iranian-American community has faced, but what has also
contributed to its successes in Southern California. This SCLN
series, funded by The James Irvine Foundation, seeks to broaden the diverse
leadership alumni network's understanding of ethnic communities and their
impact on our local perspectives, economy, and global policy linkages. It is part of SCLN's leadership initiative on global connections. View photo gallery.

Overheard
"Global warming is the greatest challenge to
the energy industry. But California is a leader on emissions reductions
and it will be imperative for other states to follow our lead."
-Joe Sparano, President, Western States Petroleum Association, at the Conversations with Leaders event, Nov. 3.
"The Bay Area Delta is perhaps one of the most sensitive enivornmental issues in the nation. The state bond proposal to address it is expensive, but necessary."
-Gilbert Ivey, Assistant General Manager and Chief Administrative Officer, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, at the Leadership L.A. 2009 session focusing on water, Nov. 13.
Alumni Spotlight

Why is it important for civic leaders to become involved in conversations around natural resources sustainability?
"When leaders engage in conversations around sustainability,
it leads to solutions that transform some of our region's greatest challenges
into our biggest assets over the long-term.
For example, the City of Los Angeles' proposed Low
Impact Development Ordinance addresses the multiple issues of stormwater
pollution, water shortages, flood control, climate change and lack of green
space by encouraging sustainable development in a cost-effective way that
captures rainwater in a variety of innovative ways onsite rather than having it
wash out to the ocean."
-Ron Milam, Principal, Ron Milam Consulting; and Graduate, Leadership
Southern California Class of 2007.
