Leadership L.A. focuses on neighborhood development in Koreatown
The Class of 2009 learned how neighborhoods grow and develop in Los Angeles on Oct. 9 with Dr. Fernando Guerra of the Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles, Loyola Marymount University, who discussed the DNA of neighborhoods in the city and his "5 Ds" that have driven what L.A. has become: decentralization, democratization, deindustrialization, development of land and demographic shifts. The case study focused on Koreatown, where Fellows met with Korean-American leaders, including Leadership Southern California alumnus Hyepin Im, Korean Churches for Community Development; as well as local business owners, developers, community organizers, historians and neighborhood councilmembers. The class closed the session at the new Solair Wilshire transit-oriented development with L.A. City Councilmember Tom LaBonge.

Alumni Spotlight

You are currently working to develop an SCLN alumni volunteer project under the economy, creativity and innovation initiative that will assist local non-profit Homeboy Industries. Please briefly tell us about your goals for this project and why it is important to our community.

"Challenging economic times call for leaders to make values not only reflecting creativity and innovation but also compassion and commitment. As we work with Homeboy Industries (HI) to learn about the organization's needs, to help strengthen their core services and businesses, and to facilitate relationships with others who share in HI's vision and mission, it is our goal also to recognize more fully leadership in ourselves, to dig in our pockets and give of our talents and resources, and to build a sustainable community where together we make a difference in keeping hope alive.

In the words of HI Founder, Father Greg Boyle: "For more than 20 years, Homeboy Industries has chosen to stand with the poor and powerless, with the easily-despised and the readily left-out. Homeboy Industries has chosen to stand with the 'demonized' so that the demonizing will stop; it stands with the 'disposable' so that the day will come when we stop throwing people away." The SCLN alumni project is about leadership acting on a choice to stand for community."

-Rachelle Wenger, Director, Public Policy and Community Advocacy, Catholic Healthcare West; and Graduate, Leadership Southern California Class of 2009.
