Leadership L.A. experiences Los Angeles' port and airport The Class of 2009 focused on our region's major trade infrastructure at both the Port of Los Angeles (pictured) and Los Angeles International Airport on Sept. 11 with top leaders from both agencies, including Dr. Geraldine Knatz, Executive Director, Port of Los Angeles; and Gina Marie Lindsey, Executive Director, Los Angeles World Airports, who discussed the balance of growing, greening and modernizing our aging infrastructure while taking into account community and political concerns. Fellows wrapped up the day with a conversation around protecting the Port and LAX, moderated by SCLN Board Member and LLA alum Chief Jim McDonnell, First Assistant Chief, Los Angeles Police Department. "The major difference post-9/11 is that there is no animosity between agencies anymore," he said. "We have to work very well together to provide adequate security." Read more

Leadership L.A. looks at law and society, makes contribution to struggling Homeboy Industries The 2009 Fellows experienced public
safety, and law and society in Los Angeles with top experts on drug
legalization, building healthy communities, homelessness and recidivism, and
were joined by Sheriff Lee Baca at the Men's Central Jail on Aug. 14. "We don't
give ourselves enough credit as a city when it comes to what we've done
together to reduce crime," said SCLN Board Member and Chief Jim McDonnell, Los
Angeles Police Department, who said the city's
crime rate has dropped by 15% in the last year bringing it to historic lows.
The session concluded with a dialogue on gang prevention with former gang
member Joey Ray Lucero, Homeboy Industries, who mentioned the organization's
budget has taken a deep dive this year. The class was able to raise
approximately $2,000 in donations and pledges to the organization, which currently works with about 8,000 individuals who
formerly belonged to 700 gangs across Los Angeles County. Read more
