Job losses in L.A. County could top 13 percent and 12.8 percent statewide, with the housing market expected to bottom out by the end of 2010, according to the forecast. Overheard

"If you live in Southern California, you live near an earthquake fault. This is a reality, and civic leaders need to be prepared."

-Erik Pounders, Geologist, U.S. Geological Survey, at the Leadership Southern California seminar on regional disaster preparedness, July 24.

"The big imbalances haven't been cured and the underlying problems haven't been fixed. There are still large housing, financial and consumer imbalances."

-Christopher Thornberg, Founding Principal, Beacon Economics, at the Los Angeles Economic Forecast Conference, July 28.

Alumni Spotlight

What is the most pressing issue facing Southern California today in terms of natural resource sustainability, and what can civic leaders do to make a difference?*

"Future energy demand will make it likely, if not certain, that petroleum-based energy supplies will continue to play an important role for many decades. Nevertheless, the petroleum industry recognizes that alternative sources of energy are a growing part of the world energy mix. Industry members are leaders in the field of energy efficiency as well as renewable fuels research and development throughout the world. Diversifying the transportation fuels supply portfolio is a key to energy security.

Civic leaders need to work with industry to promote market-based mechanisms to meet environmental objectives with the least disruption to the economy, jobs and our lifestyles.  Decision-makers need to promote strategies that are based on sound science, are cost-effective, promote market-based solutions, provide for regulatory certainty, and minimize compliance costs."

-Brissa Sotelo, Public & Government Affairs Representative, Tesoro Refinery; and Graduate, Leadership Southern California Class of 2009
