Leadership Southern California connects
land use, housing and transportation
LSC 2009 Fellows focused on the
connections between land use, housing and transportation
on June 19 with a case study excursion of transit-oriented
development along Metro’s Gold Line (above), meeting
Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, architects and developers
along the way. “The making of public space should
really be a public concern,” said Stefanos Polyzoides,
architect of the Del Mar station mixed-use development
in Pasadena. Fellows were also joined by Los Angeles
City Councilmember Ed Reyes, who stressed the importance
of good planning in building livable communities.
“Facilitating technology and smart development in
our city’s forgotten neighborhoods can transform
relationships,” he said.

Alumni Spotlight

Why do civic leaders need to understand
the intersection of economy, creativity
and innovation in Southern California?*
"If ever there was a time that genuine
creative thinking is needed to address
the complex issues of the moment,
that time is now.
Without a comprehensive and integrated
arts education, we deny ourselves
and our children a full range of
tools to meet today's and tomorrow's
challenges. Without opportunities
to explore and express our innate
creative impulses, our imaginations
remain dormant, offering us life
without happiness."
-Ben Donenberg,
Founding Artistic Director, Shakespeare
Festival/L.A.; and Graduate, Leadership
Southern California Class of 2001.

op-ed piece from July 9, 2009.
