Leadership L.A. looks at different aspects of health care in Los Angeles County
The 2009 Fellows met at the newly-acquired USC University Hospital on May 8 to discuss health care access, delivery and reform; the importance of building healthy communities; and to visit community clinics at American Apparel, Skid Row and Planned Parenthood as part of their session focusing on health care in Los Angeles. "There is a severe service capacity problem in Los Angeles," said Jim Lott, Executive Vice President, Hospital Association of Southern California. "Try using the system correctly and you get shut out." Lott
and Kathlyn Mead, Chief Operating Officer, The California Endowment, both
agreed that innovative models are key to maintaining wellness in our
communities. Mead stressed the importance of health promotion through avenues
like transportation, housing, arts and culture, and air quality. Fellows also
spoke with Mitch Creem, CEO, USC University Hospital and USC Norris Cancer
Hospital, about the university's historic acquisition of two private hospitals,
which will attract new medical talent to Southern California. View photo gallery.
Leadership Southern California 2009 regional economy
The Leadership Southern California Class of 2009 Fellows discussed Southern California’s
competitive advantages on April 17 with author and
business columnist James Flanigan, whose
recent book, Smile Southern California,
You're the Center of the Universe,
outlines the growth sectors of our
region's economy and where our strengths
lie as a region. "Southern
California has an entrepreneurial
system; there is capital available here
for innovation and business
development," said Flanigan. A panel of industry experts spoke about
opportunities that will drive economic
recovery in Southern California focusing
around international trade,
infrastructure development,
entertainment and green technology.
Panelists and LSC Fellows agreed that
many initiatives will need heightened
leadership and planning to capitalize on
these opportunities. The day concluded
with a case study of the Port of Los
Angeles as a major economic engine of
Southern California with a tour aboard
the Angelena II. View photo gallery.

Why do civic leaders need to understand water in Southern California, and how can they make a difference?*
"Civic leaders need to understand water in Southern California because water is critical to every aspect of life in this region. Reliable, high-quality water is essential to sustain life as we know it in Southern California.
Leaders can get involved at every level including neighborhood committees, home owners associations, commissions, city councils and regional organizations.
The most important way that leaders can make a difference is to know the issues and become engaged in addressing the challenges. As Peter Drucker said, 'The best way to predict the future is to create it.'"
-Margie Wheeler, Executive Strategist, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California; Graduate, Leadership L.A. 2008 and Leadership Southern California 2007; and Board Member, SCLN.
