LSC Class of 2010 looks at the people, places and trends shaping the Inland Empire today.
The Leadership Southern California Class of 2010 traveled to the Inland Empire on Friday, Feb. 26 to gain a better understanding of the people, places and trends currently shaping the inland region of Southern California. Beginning with an economic overview and forecast from Brad Kemp, Beacon Economics (pictured above), the Fellows received a foundation of knowledge about the IE's housing crisis, but potential for huge growth by 2012-2013. A panel of inland leaders, including Riverside Mayor Ron Loveridge, Arrowhead Credit Union CEO Larry Sharp and California State University, San Bernardino President Albert Karnig expressed their views on what makes the Inland Empire a unique and essential region to Southern California. The Inland Empire needs to present regional, not city, projects to state and federal funders because the region as a whole has clout, said Sharp. Fellows also experienced hands-on excursions looking at the goods movement industry with Union Pacific Railroad; visitor industry in Lake Arrowhead; as well as the importance of faith-based community organizing in Riverside. Alumni explore the Southern California-Mexico connection with top leaders from the Mexican-American community
SCLN alumni attended a dinner and dialogue with leaders of the Mexican-American community on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at La Loteria Grill in Hollywood. A common thread throughout the discussion stressed the importance of integrating Latino immigrants into society. "Latinos are an integral part of this community, and unless embraced at the upper echelons, this region will not survive," said California Community Foundation President Antonia Hernandez. The discussion was moderated by Leadership L.A. alumna Maria Contreras-Sweet, PROMERICA Bank; and panelists included Mexican Consul General Juan Marcos Gutierrez; La Opinion CEO Monica Lozano; and Hernandez, among others (pictured above), who also highlighted local perspectives, economic connections and global policy linkages of Southern California's Mexican-American community.  Read more about the event by following SCLN on Twitter. Overheard

"How can we give Latino immigrants the tools to integrate into society? Closing the informaton gap is the great power of Spanish language media."

-Monica Lozano, CEO, La Opinion, at the Global Connections event featuring the Mexican-American community, Feb. 23.

"The Inland Empire has grown by 800,000 people from 2000-2005. Comparatively, Ventura has only grown by 100,000 in the last 10 years."

-Brad Kemp, Director of Regional Research, Beacon Economics, at the Leadership Southern California 2010 seminar focusing on the Inland Empire, Feb. 26.

Alumni Spotlight

Why do you feel it is important to explore immigrant communities' connections to Southern California, and to develop cross-cultural relationships?

"I applaud and thank SCLN and the L.A. Area Chamber for hosting the Global Connections dinner series.

Global Connections offers us the unique opportunity to discover and understand the rich heritage of our city's vibrant, cultural communities, which I find essential for developing successful business and professional relationships. These successful relationships in turn foster a greater appreciation of those traits we all share, and helps bind our city."

-Sal Zambrano, P.E., Harbor Engineer, Chief of Design, Port of Los Angeles; and Graduate, Leadership Southern California Class of 2003.
