Leadership Southern California explores Orange County

The Fellows of the Class of 2010 met in Westminster on Friday, Jan. 22 to discuss the people, places and trends currently shaping Orange County, beginning with an economic overview of the trends and indicators in the region with Brad Kemp, Beacon Economics, who said the commercial real estate market will be the biggest economic issue for Orange County in the coming months. "Office vacancy rates are jumping exponentially here," said Kemp. The class was joined by business, government and community leaders from the Orange County Business Council, City of Westminster, and Orange County Community Foundation, who provided perspectives on each of their industries, as well as the challenges and opportunities for leaders in their sectors. "Orange County has the highest number of elected officials per capita in the country. This tells you we like local control," said Shelley Hoss, President, Orange County Community Foundation. The class later embarked on excursions focused on science and technology at the University of California, Irvine; global connections in Little Saigon; and land use and public works at the Orange County Great Park.

SCLN unveils new state-wide program
California needs more exemplary and diverse leaders from throughout the state's business, government and community sectors who can address the critical challenges facing California. This year, we are launching California Connections to expand opportunities and leadership development for a new generation of stewards of California's future. This new program will expand the reach of SCLN to bring together current Fellows and Alumni with other leaders from throughout the state of California.

Save the dates of April 28 - 30, 2010 for the kick-off trip, which will be a unique excursion to San Francisco and the Bay Area Delta. Guests will meet with the region's top civic leaders on San Francisco civic engagement and innovations in science and technology; transportation and land use; and social services; as well as experience a full-day focused on water resource management in the Bay Area Delta.

By 2011, a full state-wide California Connections program will launch with issue-intensive leadership seminars on greater Los Angeles, San Francisco and the Silicon Valley, the Central Valley, and the San Diego cross-border regions. Completion of the California Connections program will prepare leaders to better understand and to become more deeply engaged in the future of the State of California. Regional program partners currently include the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California; Southern California Association of Governments; San Francisco Chamber of Commerce; Bank of America; Leadership San Francisco; and The James Irvine Foundation. For sponsorship details or more information, please contact SCLN Executive Director Kevin Cottrell, 213.580.7577 or kcottrell@lachamber.com.

"The Great Park has the potential to be a binding project for Orange County, linking north and south county, and bringing together the Latino, Vietnamese, Asian and Anglo populations."

Alumni Spotlight

Remarks from the Leadership L.A. 2009 Graduation & Class Report:

"This has been a meditation on authenticity.  At the first session, we talked about how holding one's self out as a "leader" is a tricky notion. I have had conversations with many of my colleagues and have confirmed that our quest for improved civic engagement is selfless and authentic and without pretense.

We as a class struggle with time, as we maintain our careers and families.  It is the exposure and investment of the larger community that calls to us, to answer and engage with the vulnerability that comes with a personal investment in Los Angeles."

-Brenda Sutton-Wills, Staff Counsel, California Teachers Assocation; Graduate, Leadership L.A. Class of 2009; selected by her peers to write and deliver the class report at graduation on Nov. 18. Read the entire transcript on the SCLN Leadership Blog.
