Leadership L.A. learns first-hand that in education, smaller works better
The LLA Class of 2008 discussed the Los Angeles Unified School District's new movement toward small schools and small learning communities, the importance of career-technical education and opportunities for education reform at the Miguel Contreras Learning Complex on Friday, May 9 with education leaders from throughout the nation. "Instruction in our schools is core, but we cannot get to strong instruction if our students feel like they don't matter; if our parents are disconnected," said LAUSD Board Member Yolie Flores Aguilar. She participated on a panel discussing the importance of small schools, which allow students to have a more personalized experience. The session also included a conversation with students from the high school and an education reform activity lead by David Rattray, President, UNITE-LA and Vice President of Education & Workforce Development, L.A. Area Chamber. View photo gallery.

Kevin Cottrell selected for American Marshall Memorial Fellowship
SCLN Executive Director Kevin Cottrell has been awarded a 2008 American Marshall Memorial Fellowship (AMMF) from the German Marshall Fund (GMF). The AMMF was created to introduce a new generation of American leaders to European economy, institutions, politics and people. GMF awards 50 American fellowships each year to leaders in politics, government, business, media and the nonprofit sector who are committed to strengthening transatlantic relationships. Cottrell will travel to Europe in June 2008, meeting with civic leaders in Belgium, Netherlands, Turkey, Montenegro and Germany.

LAPD Chief Bratton focuses on community policing in Los Angeles
L.A. Police Chief William J. Bratton discussed community policing in a global environment and his leadership during crises at the Conversations with Leaders alumni event on April 30 at the LAPD Academy. "We are now working to convince the federal government that the LAPD is an equal partner in the war on terrorism," he said in a conversation with SCLN Board Chair Tony Buzzelli, Deloitte. Bratton said he always looks at crises as opportunities to bring about two positive changes or benefits.

SCLN Alumni and L.A. Area Chamber members hear from economist on what's ahead
The nation has yet to see the worst of the financial downturn, said Dr. Christopher Thornberg, Beacon Economics, at an Economic Outlook Briefing at the Chamber on April 29. We are not in a recession yet, Thornberg said, but the country is in the process of falling into one. He stressed that the impending economic crisis has been fueled in-part by a pull back in consumer spending. “Two years ago consumers were in the midst of a buying binge, spending more than they were earning,” said Thornberg, who recommended that people prepare for 2009, when the market will improve. This event was hosted by the Chamber, in partnership with SCLN.

LSC 2008 experiences Southern California's regional water challenges and opportunities
The Leadership Southern California Class of 2008 visited the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for an overview of the regional water agency's governance structure, infrastructure planning, delivery and conservation. "Southern California cannot continue to rely on the state water project," said MWD Assistant General Manager and Chief Administrative Officer Gilbert Ivey. The class then traveled to the F.E. Weymouth Treatment Plant in La Verne, where Fellows took a closer look at managing environmental changes with the recent proliferation of Quagga mussels in the MWD's aqueducts. Following the path of water delivery in the region, the class visited Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet- the MWD's largest source of water for Southern Californians in case of an emergency or severe drought.

OVERHEARD____________

"Southern California's key to the future is figuring out how this region can control its own water supply."

-Gilbert Ivey, Assistant General Manager and Chief Administrative Officer, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, at the Leadership Southern California Class of 2008 seminar on water, April 25.

"We are sitting in the cradle of LAUSD reform. The opportunity for greatness is here."

ALUMNI
SPOTLIGHT
________

In what kinds of community activities do you become involved, and why?

"My community activities primarily revolve around various institutions and organizations that focus on education. I truly believe that education is the future of our country.

I volunteer as a board member of the Los Angeles Trade Tech Foundation. Our purpose is to both raise money and to connect downtown L.A. businesses with the talent at L.A. Trade Tech. The K through 12 education grooms everybody to go to college, but we sometimes forget about the trade education that can provide young people with an alternative, and usually well-paid career path.

Also, California State University at Fullerton, my alma mater, asked me to be on the Advisory Board to the Dean of Engineering and Computer Sciences (ECS). This allows me to help shape policies that will affect the careers of students at CSUF. My company, Gotama Building Engineers, has just funded a scholarship available to ECS students for research focusing on sustainability."

-Caecilia Gotama, PE, AP, Principal, Gotama Building Engineers, Inc.; and graduate, Leadership L.A. Class of Fall 2002.
